Renovation and conversion of a 100 m2 apartment

Transforming the existing space and revealing its potential: this is the spirit behind this interior design project by Agence Amevet in Val Thorens. Nestled in an existing residence, this nearly 1,000-square-foot duplex apartment had many attractive features: sweeping mountain views, generous natural light, and a promising two-level layout. The new owners wanted to move away from an outdated aesthetic to create a warm, comfortable, and resolutely contemporary space, designed to welcome family and friends in a true mountain spirit. Carried out within a tight deadline, this project demonstrates the agency's expertise in complete renovation: design, furniture, decoration, and project management.

For Agence Amevet, in charge of the interior design, the aim was to combine contemporary elegance with the warmth of mountain materials. The dining area, isolated on a single level, serves a dual purpose: panoramic views and a cozy atmosphere. Natural wood, high ceilings, diffused light... the ambiance flirts with the spirit of hygge, Bauges style.

Comfort and aesthetics

The owners’ high expectations in terms of comfort and aesthetics led to a radical intervention: complete demolition of partitions, networks and finishes, replacement of external joinery and facade upgrades to significantly improve thermal and acoustic performance.

This was followed by a complete rebuild, respecting the overall volumes and retaining the original four bedrooms. But the entire interior organization was optimized, and sound insulation between the rooms considerably improved.

The major challenge was the schedule: a very short construction window between May 12 and the first half of November, including furniture, for delivery at the resort’s winter opening.

The lower floor is the access most used by owners, directly from the residence’s garages. First, there’s a ski room, designed in a “boutique” spirit, with large drawers. Designed as a highly functional space, it conceals a laundry area.

This level has three bedrooms:

  • A children’s bedroom with several beds organized into small sleeping areas.
  • One bedroom with bunk beds for children or friends,
  • The Master bedroom, very cocooning, with a strong wall treatment.

A shared shower room completes this level.

The two 50 m2 levels, bathed in light and with spectacular views of the peaks, quickly convinced the owners that this 100 m2 souplex had a lot going for it. However, the original fixtures and fittings were very dated (frieze panelling, tiled floors, 80s-style atmosphere) and the whole lacked comfort and identity.

They therefore asked Agence Amevet to renovate this apartment, located in a Val Thorens residence, to reveal its full potential. The project, which would lead to a complete transformation of the property, gradually emerged from an in-depth dialogue between them and the Agence Amevet team, led by Christophe, the interior designer in charge of the project.

The resized staircase

The aesthetic approach develops a contemporary mountain: a warm but very contemporary place, built around noble materials: old wood, parquet, lime plaster, natural materials, combined with sober lines and glass elements, notably a workshop-style glass roof that filters the kitchen from the living room while maintaining transparency.

The project’s key feature: the staircase. The original staircase was oversized. It was redesigned and reduced in size to free up surface area for the living room, making it much more generous. The staircase also becomes a key element of the project, thanks to the use of light: a composition of light fittings with cabochons accompanies it vertically, creating a highly contemporary graphic effect and contributing fully to the identity of the site.

Accessed via the central staircase, the living area opens generously onto the landscape. Living room, dining room and kitchen take up space behind a glass roof, in a contemporary mountain ambiance blending old wood, lime plaster and natural materials. A second bathroom and guest toilet complete this level, while graphic cabochon lighting fixtures accompany the staircase and sign the identity of the project.
Close to the “official” front door are an independent bedroom, a second bathroom and a guest toilet, allowing comfortable use when the apartment welcomes several families or generations.

All kitchen and bathroom equipment has been completely renewed.

From showroom to final selection

Furniture plays a central role in the project’s identity. Christophe, interior designer and project manager for Agence Amevet, first set the guidelines. ChaCha then refined the selection, models and layouts. Several showroom visits were made with customers, notably in Lyon, to test comfort, validate finishes and build a coherent, upscale universe.

The lighting fixtures were the subject of specific work, carried out with customers in a specialized showroom. In addition to functional lighting, they add a sculptural and graphic dimension, notably in the staircase with its cabochons, reinforcing the contemporary character of the apartment.

In the end, although the apartment retains its original structure, it has been totally reinvented: more comfortable, better insulated, more fluid in its uses and endowed with a strong identity, at the crossroads of the mountain spirit and a resolutely contemporary style.
