Between artisanal tradition and contemporary design

Renovating a log cabin

Agence Amevet was commissioned to renovate a log chalet.
Our clients reached out to us after being won over by one of our previous projects: the renovation of a log chalet in the Hautes-Alpes.

Our sense of aesthetics and our technical expertise on a program similar to theirs had captured their attention.

Light contribution :

In this project, our interior designers first worked on the existing wood color. Using a sandblasting technique, the wood regained its natural appearance. The application of a woodstain in light, soft tones enhanced the chalet.

The choice of lighting fixtures was also a key element of the project, in particular to highlight the loggia and the chalet’s various fittings. The customers, who are passionate about decoration, were particularly involved in the choice of lighting.

Fuste: ancestral know-how meets contemporary challenges

Log cabins feature a very special construction system. Tree trunks are stacked, adjusted and crossed at the corners.

Fuste offers many advantages, particularly in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation.

On the other hand, the interior layout of a log cabin presents major constraints. In fact, it’s often treated in a very raw style, sometimes associated with the homes of Canadian trappers.

For their chalet, acquired in 2020, our customers wanted a bright, contemporary look.

Our interior designers worked in several areas:

Space reorganization :

Our interior designers have completely rethought the organization of the spaces. Large volumes were dedicated to the kitchen, living room and lounge. These spaces have been thought through in terms of their links with the outdoors. The sheltered terrace becomes another room.

But to reorganize the spaces, it was also necessary to work with the existing structure, which could only support minor modifications.

For example, on the first floor, there was an arch whose lines did not correspond at all to the project. This arch was modified. In this location, our interior designers created a bespoke layout: TV/library unit on one side, walk-in wardrobe on the other.

In the center of the living space, the central pillar, formed by the crossing of the fustes, has been preserved: although this element could have been a constraint in the organization, our interior designers wanted to bring it to the fore.

Each space is well-defined: a master suite on the ground floor, and upstairs a social/games area, reading corner, children’s bedrooms and bathrooms.

Special fittings and fixtures :

Numerous layouts have been created. These made-to-measure layouts perfectly match the curves of the log, while offering a wealth of functional storage space. They have also structured the volumes of the rooms to give them a contemporary feel.

While seeking to preserve the soul of the chalet, the partitions and ceilings were the subject of extremely meticulous work. While preserving the soul of the chalet, the use of plasterboard allowed for the placement of technical elements (integrated lighting, speakers, VMC, etc.), as well as breaking with an all-wood interior.

Furniture and decoration :

Our “Ensemblier” team assisted our customers in the selection and supply of furniture (choice of models, fabric, wood and metal finishes). Certain pieces of furniture were made to measure, such as the solid oak and metal dining table.) All curtains and headboards were designed and supplied by Agence Amevet’s furniture department.
